What is a student-led conference?

South Slope will be hosting Student-Led Conferences on May 6 & May 7.  Each teacher will email you their class schedule for these open house conferences, some teachers are available on the 6th & some on the 7th.

What is a Student-led Conference?  Student-led conferences are an important part of the reporting process. Your child(ren) will share with you their progress in school activities to date. This is a proud time for your child as they take a lead role in discussing their learning achievements and areas for growth!

The structure of the conferences will vary according to students’ grade and the work that they have been doing in each classroom. Students may demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways. For example, they may show you portfolios, journal entries, reports, artwork or writing samples. You may see in-progress science experiments or math problems. Some of the materials you see during the conference may have been chosen by your child and some by your child’s teacher. Often items are selected for a specific reason. The selections may not always be finished or the most polished piece of work but might demonstrate growth or an area of improvement.

Our students are excited about sharing their knowledge and they are working on improving their ability to be reflective thinkers. We ask that you listen, ask questions and encourage your child in this reflective process. Self-evaluation is key to becoming a life-long learner – which is a goal we have for all our students.
